Grammy's Sugar cookies

I love to cook and would much prefer to eat something homemade then made from a box. Homemade food tastes better to me and my family and a lot of the time the meals are healthier and less expensive than their store made, processed counterparts. Make It Yourself Monday gives me a chance to experiment with some recipes that I might not have tried before.

In my family this recipe is called "Grammy's sugar cookies" and this is the first time I have ever made them. My great grammy made these cookies and tasting them took me back to my childhood. This past weekend I was looking through my recipes trying to find a simple dessert. I came across this recipe and I had all of the ingredients on hand. I would call that simple. These sugar cookies are cake-like and spongy. I wouldn't call this a healthful recipe, but they are tasty. I served the cookies with a fresh fruit salad.

Grammy's sugar cookies

1 C shortening
2 C sugar
3 eggs
1 teas vanilla
1 C sour milk - To make sour milk, put 1 Tbsp vinegar in a cup of milk and let sit for a few minutes
4 C flour
2 teas baking powder
1 teas baking soda
dash salt
Mix the wet ingredients together and then add the dry.
Sprinkle sugar on cookies before putting in oven. We used some leftover Valentine sugar.
Bake 375 degrees for about 8-10 minutes
