As I am trying to choose thrift first when it comes to purchases for my family and our home, I realized once again recently that my local, friendly thrift store rarely lets me down.
Armed with a mental list of things that I needed to keep my eye open for, I headed to the store on Wednesday for the 50% off sale.
With the warm weather finally hitting us in PA. I found myself a little unprepared. When the kids were getting ready for bed on a rather warm night this past weekend, I realized that they really didn't have much to wear to bed for the warmer weather.
When I went to pull on a pair of shorts for the first time, I realized that I didn't have very many pairs that weren't stained, frayed or ripped. After sorting through my shorts, I had two pairs left that weren't going to be retired to my "gardening" clothes pile.
And our 10 year old bath towels are really beginning to show their age by fraying and thinning out. I guess I shouldn't complain about my towels lasting ten years.
So armed with snacks and water for my 3 year old, I headed to the store on a mission...along with about 300 other people in my community. The store was packed on Wednesday. I guess everyone else realized the same thing as I did when the temperature hit 83 degrees.
To my delight, I found 3 pairs of shorts for myself, summer jammies for both of the kids, a pair of shorts for my 5 year old and one towel. I also picked up 6 rolls of masking tape for my Square Foot Garden. Every item (and I mean every item) appeared in brand new condition; absolutely no evidence of wear or tear.
My most favorite find: the turquoise Ann Taylor Loft shorts. Not a color I would normally buy, but for $2.50, I'll take it.

I LOVE shopping at my local thrift stores...Good Will, Salvation Army and Unique. Much of my wardrobe these days comes from thrift stores. I love checking out the pictures & furniture items too, and have found some great things to decorate our home! :)
ReplyDeleteI always choose thrift first. I haven't been lately, because I don't really need anything right now, but have found sewing supplies, canning jars, casserole dishes, a stainless steel baking sheet, shoe laces for my husband's sneakers because in his work he wears through the laces faster than the sneakers. It's really a case of deciding what you need, and then check the store frequently until it shows up, because it almost always will.
ReplyDeleteI always start with a thrift store. We have a couple here in our town that support the Humane Society. I love to shop there, and try to stick with the color tag of the day for added savings. Almost everything in my home is used, from thrifting, craigslist and consignment shops for furniture and all household goods. Not so easy with clothes, but most come from thriftying, and we live a very nice life.
ReplyDeleteLove to thrift. my 3 year old daughter loves it too. She is always finding new treasures of all kinds for her doll collection and play kitchen. I get kid clothes, maternity clothing, wool sweaters to felt and use for crafts, plastic table cloths for kid-crafts that are messy, cotton and linen draperies for other home-sewing crafts. It amazes me how much money you can save, especially on those discount days. I do Goodwill, Salvation Army, our local Unique and Catholic diocese thrift store.
ReplyDeleteI got serious about thrift shopping about two yrs ago when I left a career position and began working part-time. I love shopping thrift! My son (age10) at the time I began thrift shopping wasn't too sure about it but he soon found out I would buy him the name brand he had wanted it I found it at a thirty store (I was a Target/walmart shopper before). He now loves going with me and finding Nike and other sports related high dollar items for $1-$2.
ReplyDeleteI love to see what everyone finds through thrifting. Thanks everyone for reading and commenting.
