31 Days to Find $1000 400X400

On day 1 of 31 Days to Find $1000, our mission is to make the month a “Needs Only” Month. For 31 days, we will ask ourselves before each purchase, “is this a WANT or a NEED?”  and “Can I get through my day/week/month/ life without this purchase?”

For one month we’re going to set aside our impulses and focus on our goal to find $1000.

I’m not telling you that you can’t spend ANY money this month; I’m just suggesting that we spend only on our needs and leave our wants for another time–like when you don’t need 4 new tires or have a high credit card bill.

This will be a daily act of discipline for all of us. I can’t tell you what your needs or wants are, only you can decide that, but we can and we will get through this month–together. At the end of each day, update your goal/tally sheet posted on your fridge with any unspent money that will be going towards your $1000.

Our motto with this challenge,  “The Goal is BIGGER Than the Stuff.”

Are you joining me in finding $1000 in October? Do you think you can handle a “Needs Only” month? Let us know in the comments.

Care to join me on this challenge? You can follow along and join the challenge on the closed Facebook Group: Family Budgeters Unite!

I did a ‘needs only’ month in September and was fairly successful at it. I managed to save over $500 on a VERY tight budget, and get our spent-down $1000 emergency fund back up to $850. I’m so thrilled with that! Now, we need to pay off a summer vacation that went a couple thousand over budget (ack!) and onto a credit card. The a/c in the car breaking down while driving across hot and dusty Montana didn’t help, if excuses count at all. 🙁

So, I’m hoping to keep finding $500 to $1000 a month for a while and I THANK YOU for the inspiration to keep going this month. It would be nice to save up a bit for Christmas too.

I love the look of your blog and your approach here.

LisaZ – It is very inspiring to read that you were able to save $500 in one month. Congrats. It is not going to be easy for me and my family, especially since my family isn’t very excited about a “needs” only month. I’m sorry about your car a/c–it’s amazing how expenses add up so quickly.

So funny you mention this…we’re going to Disney World the day after Halloween. I also found out I can’t use a military discount I was counting on when budgeting for the trip. Perfect timing? YES!
