This was a big week at my house.

I gave in, surrendered, (and got suckered) by my family and agreed that it was time to get a dog. I’ve been dragging my heels for years. It’s not that I don’t like dogs. I love dogs. But when our Toby passed away suddenly back in 2009, I told my husband that it would be a while until we got another one. I had a toddler and an infant and that was all I could handle at the time.

But as the years passed and our kids grew less dependent, my husband started nudging me about a dog. I reluctantly agreed and before I could change my mind, he scheduled a home visit with American Brittany Rescue. We were approved and told that ABR would match the right dog for our family. It seemed reasonable and I was expecting that it would take months before the “right” dog came along.

But NO, a week after the home visit and we were approved, a dog came into the rescue that was perfect for our family.

Last weekend, we drove 2 hours to pick up Ruby. She’s a 6 year old Brittany and unfortunately the only humans that Ruby has known since she was 8 weeks old are having major health issues and are unable to give her the attention that she needs.

I’ve never seen such glee in my girls’ faces. We are completely smitten with Ruby.

Strawberry season has hit central PA and I couldn’t be happier. I picked 8 quarts this week. I put about 4 quarts in the freezer for smoothies. I used one quart to make freezer jelly and we ate the rest.

And finally, we said good-by to second grade and kindergarten on Friday. My girls are on to bigger and better things next year in third and first grades. But first up, we’re planning on having an awesome summer!

Congratulations on your new family member! Not just a rescue, but a 6 y/o as well — that is just wonderful! As someone who has done rescue for years, I’m so happy to hear that you didn’t just buy a puppy. Ruby is a lucky girl!

Thanks for your comments, Sharon! Our first dog several years ago was a rescue too and he was a sweet boy. We just can’t justify the price of dogs from breeders when there are so many dogs that need homes. Ruby is a sweet heart and we are the lucky ones!

[…] I completely missed the May 30 meeting. I’ll blame it on Ruby, since that was the day that we picked her up from the Brittany rescue–my mind was a bit […]
