The kids are heading Back to School! YAY!!
Reading, writing, arithmetic…and the school lunch. My kids have a love/hate relationship with their school’s cafeteria. What sounds good on the school menu, doesn’t always look or taste so good, so they end up packing their lunch about 4 days a week.
But I fear when I’m not present (in the cafeteria), and their packed lunch is less than attractive, it will also end up in the trash, and not their bellies.
How can we, as parents, pack a lunch for the kids that is nutritious and appealing to our children?
Fortunately, a team of nutritionists at GIANT Food Stores wants to help parents start the new school year off right, and offered some tips to build a better lunch.
4 Tips to Build a Better School Lunch
1. Make Healthy Choices
Focus on making wise and healthy choices by including foods and beverages from the 5 MyPlate food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. Print a copy of the infographic below and post it on your refrigerator as a reminder of the 5 food groups. Be sure to pack a minimum of 3 food groups in your child’s lunch. Check out ChooseMyPlate.gov for ideas and tips to help you create a healthier menu.
- Chicken Nuggets: I bake chicken nuggets, like GIANT’s Nature’s Promise Naturals brand, in the toaster oven, and keep them in a thermos in their lunch box. The kids tell me the nuggets stay warm. I also pack some ketchup in a tight small container.
- Hardboiled egg and crackers
- Rice cakes with nut butter
- Ham or turkey and cheese roll ups
- Taco meat. My kids love tacos, so I heat leftover taco meat in the microwave, sprinkle on a little cheese, and store in the thermos. Pack a spoon a some tortilla or pita chips.
