Two things about me: I hate to spend money on things that end up in the trash. And I am also madly in love with my Swiffer Sweepervac.

And there lies my dilemma. The flooring in every room in my home is either laminate or hard wood. I love our floors, but they quickly appear dirty or dusty and that drives me crazy. Since my kids play on the floors a lot I feel like I need to clean the floors often and that isn’t fun.

Our Living Room

I bought the Swiffer Sweepervac because it was light weight and would be easier to use on a daily basis over my heavy vacuum cleaner. I keep it charged in my garage and I have now gotten into the habit of Swiffering (is that a word?) my floors on a daily to every other day basis.

Back to my dilemma.

The downside of my Swiffer is the disposable refills. When I’m Swiffering my floors daily, it’s easy to go through several disposable refills at once. Again, I HATE to spend money on things that just end up in the trash. It seemed like a lot of waste too.

To solve my problem, I took some old flannel baby blankets and cut them into 10 1/2 inch by 8 1/2 inch squares to fit my Swiffer. I didn’t bother sewing the squares to have neat edges, like I’ve seen on Pinterest. These squares will be dusting my floors. I don’t have time to make them pretty–I just need them to be functional.

Now I don’t feel guilty when I use several squares daily to swiffer the floors in my house. I just throw them in the laundry with my other cleaning rags. And when these squares wear out, I’ll head to the thrift store for some cheap flannel shirts.

It’s working like a charm…if that is the right word to describe vacuuming.

Do you use a Swiffer? Do you buy the refills or do you make your own? Let us know in the comments.

I highly recommend the Swiffer Sweepervac for quick cleanups:

Hi I was also wondering if you had any “list” of things you do to maintain the house. Something along the lines of clean gutters in the fall every 3 years, wash windows every spring,…. all in a list.

    Thanks,
    BJ

I bought a Swiffer floor mop knowing I had seen the post. And being a pack rat, I still have some flannel blankets I can cut up!
