Save Money Shop Thrift & Consignment stores

The first day of spring was last week and warmer weather is right around the corner.

Although it was 25 degrees in PA just this morning…so could someone please let Mother Nature know about the change in seasons??!!

Anyway, I started going through our spring and summer clothes recently to see what our needs are. I figured if I started to sort through clothes now, we will be prepared when it really is time to put away the sweaters and winter coats. My older daughter is growing like a weed and has outgrown pretty much everything from last year, so I know I have some serious shopping to do.

I want to reduce what I spend on clothing for my family, so as I was sorting through our spring/summer clothing from last year, I made a list of our needs to get us through this season. Fortunately, my youngest daughter doesn’t really need any clothing. She is the recipient of her older sister’s hand me downs and so far she hasn’t pitched a fit about that. But I’m sure I’ll pick up a few deals for her too.

With my list, I went to my favorite thrift store to see what I could find. I only shop there on Wednesdays to take advantage of their 50% off sale.

thrifting spring & summer clothing

I found:

  • black Ann Taylor shorts for myself – $2.00 after 50% discount
  • brand new white dress shoes for my oldest daughter – $2.50 after 50% discount
  • cute purple flats for my oldest daughter – $2.50 after 50% discount
  • t-shirts & tank tops for both daughters – $1- $2 each after 50% discount

What I’m still looking for at the thrift stores:

  • shorts
  • summer dresses
  • more tank tops and t-shirts

I’m very particular about what I buy at the thrift stores. Everything must be in excellent condition for me to buy it and honestly, I never have a problem finding new stuff. The smiley face t-shirt in the picture still had store tags on it. The shoes (along with everything else) were NOT visibly worn.

It grosses some people out to buy shoes at thrift stores, but I have really good success finding new or almost new shoes for both my girls–me, not so much! As soon as I walk into a thrift store, I head straight to the shoe racks. I’ve found brand new Keen sandals and brand new K Swiss sneakers, both about $40 or more at retail.

There are some things that I will most likely buy new at a retail store this year, but on sale, of course!

What I plan to buy NEW:

  • swim suits for both girls
  • flip flops for both girls
  • casual sandals for both girls if I can’t find at the thrift store

So far I’m off to a good start.

Have you started shopping for spring and summer clothing? Do you shop at thrift stores? What great deals have you found so far?

I really need to make a list before I go thrift shopping. I love finding great deals for my kids at our local thrift stores. I’m lucky because my youngest is in mostly hand-me-downs from his brother, but the older two frequently need new (to them) clothes.
Question for you: How many of each piece of clothing do you think is enough? As in, how many pants, shirts, etc. does one kid need at a time?

Hi Rabia! That’s a good question. My oldest daughter usually has between 4-6 pants/skirts/shorts and 6-8 tops. My youngest always seems to have more clothing because she gets her sister’s hand-me-downs and any “new” to her clothes she might find at the thrift store. She’s my little fashionista.
