Could you use $1000? Me too! Follow along as I find $1000 in 31 Days!
There are two schools of thought when hiring someone else to do a task that you are capable of: (1) you’re saving yourself time and therefore you can be productive in other areas or (2) you can do the task yourself and keep the money to yourself.
I have no problem in outsourcing tasks, but our goal this month is to save $1000, so I’ve reconsidered certain tasks that I pay someone else to do and instead I’ll put that money towards our savings goal.
Today’s challenge: Do-It-Yourself & Save.
Think about all of the things that you outsource:
- house cleaning
- haircuts
- car wash
- household repairs
- lawn maintenance
Recently, both of my girls needed to have their shoulder length hair trimmed after a long summer of swimming. I searched on You Tube for videos on cutting girls’ hair and found several that were quite helpful. Granted their hairstyles are basic and I wouldn’t try a style where training would be needed, but they just needed their ends and bangs trimmed. The videos gave me the confidence to cut their hair myself while saving myself $30–and their cuts looked great.
Last year, we came home from vacation to a washing machine that wouldn’t work. After a quick search online, we realized that the repair was completely at our skill level and our cost was just $40 to replace a broken part. By fixing the repair ourselves instead of calling Sears for the repair, we saved $100.
As much as I long for a house cleaner, it’s just not in our budget at this time, so our house gets cleaned by me.
The neighbor kids have a lawn mowing business and many of our other neighbors are clients. But our lawn gets mowed by my husband.
Our girls help us wash our cars in the warmer months, but I admit to neglecting this task during the colder months. Although, we will take the cars to a car wash in the winter to remove any salt from the roads during a snowfall or ice storm.
What can you do yourself to help you meet your savings goal this month? Let us know in the comments.

Our daughters room needed more storage we had 2 captain beds with 4 drawers
Each. My husband made a 4 drawer chest and a window seat with 4 drawers
My daughter gain 8 drawers of storage in her room. We did not spend a dime and I found foam
Padding In the garage and made her a cusion for the window seat! We save the cost of new furniture !
What a great idea! Our daughters both have very small rooms and storage is a challenge, but it sounds like your husband solved that problem. Thanks for reading and commenting.
